California’s 61st State Assembly District is one of 80 districts in the California State Assembly (the lower house of the state legislature). It is located entirely within southwestern Los Angeles County and represents roughly 490,000 residents. The district elects one Assemblymember who serves two-year terms and helps shape state laws on education, public safety, the economy, transportation, and family-related issues.
The district includes the cities of Hawthorne, Inglewood, and Lawndale; the unincorporated communities of Lennox, Del Aire, West Athens, Westmont, and Marina del Rey; and portions of Gardena and the City of Los Angeles (including areas around Los Angeles International Airport, Westchester, Playa del Rey, and nearby neighborhoods). As of 2026, the district is represented by Democrat Tina McKinnor of Hawthorne. She has held the seat since December 2022. Assemblymembers focus on local priorities such as education funding, public safety, infrastructure, and economic opportunity for families.
According to 2020 Census data adjusted for redistricting, the district has a population of approximately 491,779. It is one of the more diverse districts in California: about 45.5% Hispanic or Latino, 25.3% Black or African American, 18.4% White, 5.7% Asian, and smaller percentages of other groups. Hawthorne was founded in the early 1900s on former ranch land (part of the historic Rancho Sausal Redondo) and promoted as a place “between the city and the sea.” It later grew with aviation and manufacturing. Inglewood was established in the late 1880s around the Centinela Springs and developed into a major South Bay city. Lawndale and surrounding communities share similar agricultural-to-suburban growth stories common to the South Bay. These histories reflect the region’s transition from ranchos and farmland to modern residential and industrial communities.
- Marina del Rey — North America’s largest man-made small-craft harbor, with thousands of boat slips, waterfront parks, restaurants, and family-friendly events such as boat parades and summer concerts. It was formally dedicated in 1965 after decades of planning.

After many challenges, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Los Angeles County developed it into a recreational marina. Dedicated in 1965, it remains a popular destination for boating, dining, walking paths, and family outings while supporting local jobs and tourism.
